Who We Are

Hate Is A Virus, a nonprofit organization of amplifiers and mobilizers dedicated to dismantling racism and all forms of hate. In March 2020, we saw a rise in anti-asian hate crimes and incidents. What started off as a local initiative to support small Asian-owned businesses, it quickly grew into a movement once lockdown was mandated. We witnessed our community hurting and wanted to create a safe space for our community and advocates to speak up, feel safe, and be heard. In a matter of weeks, we saw over 15 million impressions across social media platforms and received countless of messages from you all asking how you can help. Hate Is a Virus became more than just a hashtag movement - we took it a step further to fundraise for small businesses and organizations that needed it the most.

We have since evolved into a nonprofit organization that encourages our community to participate in local and national awareness campaigns, create safe spaces for dialogue and education, and provide actionable steps in partnership with trusted community leaders and organizations. We have given grants to dozens of community organizations focused on programs addressing gender-based violence, LGBTQIA+ community support, community organizing, and much more.

Our Work

Our overarching mission as an organization continues to be dismantling racism and hate. We took action by raising $1M, which we’ve started disbursing in grants to 50+ nonprofit organizations across the nation, addressing various impact areas, through our Community Action Fund.

Funded projects range from local community work; tracking hate violence; humanitarian assistance for asylum seekers; educational materials; a community listening project; healing justice workshops; mutual aid projects; a Lights festival; and SO much more. We’ll be building a page on our site where you can read more about the programs funded by these grants.

We organized our own community events, connecting with many of you virtually and in-person. At the Changemakers Summit, together with our partners, we brought together youth activists and leaders for a day of education, community, and art. This couldn’t have been achieved without the support of our whole community.

This is only our second year as a nonprofit. We still have a lot to learn, and we’re honored to be a part of this journey with you.
